Step 5: Kids Bedroom Features
Kids' bedrooms can be epic in a tiny house as they capture the essence of tiny living. Kids' bedrooms will vary depending on age groups, as a toddler's room will have different needs to a teen's room. Most importantly, the goal is to create a functional space that doesn't overlook a fun entertaining space.
Let your inner child take the lead on developing this room, add a splash of colour, or set a fun theme to lead the room's design. No matter how your kids' bedroom is shaping up; I've broken down some key things to think about when you're designing and some ideas on futureproofing rooms to avoid having to redesign.

Bedside Storage
Making your choice of bed first will decide how much space you'll have for storage next to the bed. Bedside storage is a perfect spot for a small lamp, a place for your book, a glass of water, or to charge your phone. Everything can be easily accessible and right there when you need it. A simple floating shelf might be just right for you for one or two items. If you'd like to have a little more storage tucked away, a drawer will be perfect for you.

General Bed Sizes
Considering where the bedroom will be (loft or ground floor) and how much space is available, don't be afraid to explore all the suitable bed options.
Tip:
If you're designing for a loft, stay clear of the raised and bunk beds, but consider the advantages and disadvantages of all the other options. If you're worried about headroom but love the extra storage underneath, consider opting for a single row of draws instead of two.
Ultimately choosing what bed fits into your tiny house bedroom will be dependent on the needs of the space and overall comfort. Whether you're set on raised or storage beds, ensure room for growth spurts!

Standard Bed
Standard beds are easy to get in different styles to suit your tiny home. If you'd prefer this option, that's no problem! However, I would encourage you to explore other options that offer more than just a sleeping space. Think of the toys, clothes, shoes, or school bag storage potential underneath!
Handy Tip:
If you have a bed at home you're not ready to let go of, think about making it fit for tiny living. Maybe it's adding a couple of draws underneath, or if you've decided the kids' bedroom will be in the loft, think about altering the legs or removing them altogether to increase headroom.

Built-in Shelving
If you're looking to squeeze every little bit of storage out of this room, try adding shelves to the headboard. These are great for a reading lamp, book storage, or to showcase some toy favorites.

Lowered Beds
If you're thinking of a loft bedroom, you'll want your mattress and bed frame to be as low to the ground as possible to increase the head height and overall comfort!
Handy Tip:
If you’ve already got a bed frame, altering or removing the legs altogether is a great way to reuse old furniture and make it suitable for tiny living!

Storage Beds
Storage beds are a great way to maximise all storage opportunities in your tiny house bedroom with easy access. Draws tucked under the bed are an excellent option for storing shoes, clothes, bags, and blankets. They're also a great option to quickly tidy up the room when all the toys seem to have exploded all over the floor.

Trundle Beds
If you're looking for an extra sleeping space that can be tucked away and forgotten, trundle beds are fit for the job. During the day, there is room to play as the extra mattress is tucked away and pulled out at night to accommodate for sleepovers. Trundle beds are great for incorporating an additional sleeping space into the kids' bedroom without causing too much fuss!

Day Bed
Day beds are a great option as they are fantastic to unwind during the day and sleep on at night. Doubling as a sofa and a bed, they are great for getting the most out of a small space and offering a heap of storage underneath.
Day beds are great as they offer so much flexibility for a growing child. The three-sided bed makes this an excellent option for both toddlers and teens. Those still growing into a full-size bed can benefit by pushing the open side of the bed up against the wall to lower the chance of rolling off the bed. As kids grow up, turning the daybed around creates a sofa during the day and sleeping space at night.

Bunks
Bunks are all-time space-savers and great for tiny houses. These are a great option to create two separate sleeping spaces in the area of one. To make the most out of bunking, consider stacking them in a corner, as shown in the picture!

Raised Beds
If you don't have to worry about headroom, consider a raised bed to free up floor space. Pulling the bed up off the floor allows for a workspace or nook underneath. Taking advantage of your tiny house's vertical space to make two spaces out of one makes for a successful tiny house design!

Bedside Storage
Bedside storage is an excellent solution for things that are preferred to be in arms reach when winding down for the night. Think about alarm clocks; no one wants to walk halfway across the room to turn it off (even if it is a way to get you out of bed). If you're not looking to pack your kids' room with furniture, a small shelf is more than enough for placing essentials. Also, think about above the headboard; this is an effective and compact way of getting some storage in!

Wardrobes
Wardrobes are a fantastic way to organise your belongings and be space-efficient at the same time. Keeping everything tucked away, and tidy will be a big win for kids' bedrooms. With a mixture of hanging space and drawers, make sure this space is ready to fit all things from toys and instruments to clothes and shoes. Most importantly, make sure the wardrobe appeals to the kids. If you know they won't have the effort to hang all their clothes, opt for more draws than hanging space. After all, if you can design it so kids will use it, you're on your way to a successful kids' bedroom.

Workspaces
Workspaces are always a great addition to a kids’ bedroom if you have the space available. Having a designated surface for arts and crafts, homework, or a place to play will avoid it all resorting to the floor. To put it simply a workspace will never be a waste of space in a kids’ bedroom. If you’re short on space consider a temporary workspace to be pulled out when needed. There are great options for foldable or wall hung desks that are perfect if you don’t want to dedicate space to a desk permanently.
Check out how we used the same workspace to be suitable for children and teens!

Shelving & Bookshelves
Shelving can be a great way to keep all things up off the floor and organised. Consider shelving units that can keep books tidy and allow for toy storage also. Cube storage inserts are excellent for keeping everything tucked away and neat, especially for keeping all those little toys altogether. A combination of storage inserts and space to display your child's favourite toys is a great way to personalise the room and optimise storage.

Other Points to Consider
Here's a couple of other things to keep in mind while designing your kids’ bedroom(s) in tiny houses.
Proximity
An important part to consider when designing a tiny home is the proximity of the kids' bedrooms to the main bedroom. Proximity preferences will differ from family to family, but it is essential to consider while designing. A tiny house will result in a smaller living environment, and while that has many advantages, it may also mean you'll want some distance between the private spaces.

There are many solutions; our family tiny house, Petite Maison, separates the bedrooms horizontally through a full-height walkway. Otherwise, you could opt for vertical separation with the main bedroom on the ground floor and the kids' bedrooms reserved for the loft.

Access to Loft Bedrooms
If you like the idea of having a loft kids' bedroom, think about what access would be suitable for their age range. Stairs are a great option and less demanding than climbing a ladder. They also have the opportunity to open onto walk ways that can be made full-height with the right design. However, if you're not worried about climbing toddlers or you're past this point, consider a ladder for access. As well as the ladder being a smaller, more space-efficient option, it could make for a fun and amusing way to get to their room.
